Nestled in the outskirts of Augusta, Georgia, where the tranquil fields meet the expansive sky, a revolution is being brewed. It’s a tale that begins with a solidly built facility, a community yearning for change, and a pioneering company. Their story is not only about an industrial rebirth but also marks a new era in the biotech world, uniquely human in its approach and impact.

Just a Few Years Ago, a Factory Closed, and the Site was no Longer in Use

Here, in the heartland of America, in a tranquil corner of Augusta, Georgia, the silhouette of a beloved factory stands against the vast expanse of rural skies. It’s a landscape where the echoes of the past meet the promise of the future, a scene of quiet, transformative revolution. This isn’t just the tale of a rural manufacturing facility; it’s the narrative of rural America’s reawakening.

Witnessing the transition from an old economy to a new one in America is like watching a new dawn. Some are already heralding this as the start of a new industrial revolution, a movement driven not by machines and assembly lines but by advanced biotechnology and a renewed bond with nature.

“Manus has been paving the way for large-scale biomanufacturing by recommissioning the Augusta plant. From a pilot plant in 2018 to a current capacity of 1.3 million liters, it is now one of the largest precision fermentation facilities in America."

Facts: Manus in Augusta

Going local: Manus purchased the Augusta facility in 2018 and is ramping up production for a new era of biomanufacturing, including a groundbreaking citrus flavor ingredient called BioNootkatone, launched with Givaudan, a global leader in taste and wellbeing. Manus has also invented the core technology and helps NutraSweet, the natural zero calorie sweetener brand, scale up the process for bioconversion of stevia extract.

Scaling Up: With a current capacity of 1.3 million liters, the Augusta BioFacility is one of the largest precision fermentation facilities in the world and is on its way to a 2-million-liter capacity by 2026.

Creating new jobs: Expertise is needed to operate such a complex BioFacility. Manus hired over 30 former employees from the previous owner of the site, and there are now about 120 people working at the plant.

At the Intersection of Science and Nature

As you delve deeper into this narrative, you begin to see where science sheds its clinical sterility and embraces the vibrancy of life. This is where advanced biotechnology transcends laboratory walls to become a tangible reality that one can touch, see, and feel.

Manus, the catalyst of this change, has simplified the complex science behind their work without diminishing its impact. They’ve engineered microbes and developed a novel fermentation-based technology that mirrors and amplifies natural processes. The result? Everyday products that not only cater to our needs but also nurture our health and the planet’s well-being.

“We can only harness the significant potential of biotechnology and bring amazing advances in science from the lab into people’s lives by developing biology-based manufacturing."

Scaling up Impact: Not Just a Grand Idea. It’s a Reality. Today. Right Now.

In Augusta, Manus has paved the way with a large-scale BioFacility supported by a team of experienced experts ready to elevate the process to production scale. It has evolved into a powerful platform that generates products and responds to a growing global demand for healthier, more sustainable alternatives.

Manus shows us that advanced biotechnology’s transformative power isn’t confined to urban metropolises or high-tech corridors. It’s taking root in rural America, blossoming amidst fields and factories, proving that impactful innovation can emerge from the most unexpected landscapes.

As we observe this shift, one thing becomes abundantly clear: The rebirth of rural America isn’t just about economic resurgence. It’s about redefining our relationship with nature and technology, shaping a more sustainable future, and proving that progress and preservation can indeed go hand in hand.

Global Bioeconomy is Set to Soar

The global bioeconomy, valued at nearly one trillion dollars, is projected to grow to over $30 trillion in the next two decades.
